Résumé : La visite de Jack Ma, fondateur de la multinationale numérique Alibaba sur le continent africain en mars et avril 2020, suscite des interrogations sur la posture des hommes d’affaires philanthropes en relations internationales, et plus précisément dans les questions humanitaires de concert avec les gouvernements des Etats. Cette contribution, en prenant appui sur la pandémie Covid-19 et les tentatives de sa résorption telles que construites et vécues, remet au goût du jour la question toujours pertinente des dons dans les relations internationales. Elle donne à voir, par l’entremise de l’investissement de l’homme d’affaires chinois Jack Ma construit autour d’un capital symbolique, comment l’appui sanitaire pris comme objectif à court terme peut servir de bras séculier à long terme à la Chine dans la perspective de son positionnement stratégique en Afrique. A partir de là, et suivant la configuration du don conceptualisé par Marcel Mauss, l’on voit comment capitalisant la sympathie du visage philanthrope incarné par l’homme d’affaires Jack Ma, face à l’impréparation, au sous-développement du continent africain confronté aux besoins en termes d’espaces d’échanges et de renforcement de ses partenariats économiques, la diplomatie sanitaire est mobilisée pour mettre en avant les intérêts chinois.

Abstract : The visit of Jack Ma, founder of the digital multinational Alibaba, to the African continent in March and April 2020 raises questions about the role of philanthropic businessmen in international relations, particularly in humanitarian matters alongside state governments. This contribution, drawing on the Covid-19 pandemic and the attempts to address it as constructed and experienced, revisits the ever-relevant issue of donations in international relations. It shows, through the investment of the Chinese businessman Jack Ma, built around symbolic capital, how short-term health support can serve as a long-term secular arm for China in its strategic positioning in Africa. From there, and following the configuration of the gift conceptualized by Marcel Mauss, we see how, by capitalizing on the sympathy of the philanthropic face embodied by businessman Jack Ma, in the face of the unpreparedness and underdevelopment of the African continent, which is confronted with the need for exchange spaces and the strengthening of its economic partnerships, health diplomacy is mobilized to advance Chinese interests.
